The Facility
The world's pioneering NORM treatment facility.
Radium, thorium and their decay products occur naturally in geological formations. Oil and gas production concentrates them: they precipitate into scale and sludge inside tubulars, separators and storage tanks. The result is waste that is not classified as industrial hazardous waste, and cannot be treated as such.
Until this plant existed, operators in the region had no local route for it. Magma's NORM facility was established as the first of its kind anywhere — a dedicated line for the treatment, processing and disposal of naturally occurring radioactive material from onshore and offshore drilling, inside the Emirates and under regulated conditions.
What the plant does
The objective is volume reduction and secure containment: less material in long-term storage, and what remains held in a stable, monitored form.

Treatment
Receipt, survey and treatment of NORM-bearing sludges and scale under controlled conditions, with activity verified on arrival before anything is processed.
Processing
Separation and volume reduction to concentrate activity into the smallest possible fraction, so the volume requiring long-term management falls.
Disposal
Conditioning into a stable form and placement in engineered containment, with records held per consignment for the life of the material.
What NORM accepts
Onshore drilling
NORM-bearing production sludges, tank and vessel scale, separator residues, produced water solids
Offshore drilling
Platform sludges and scale returned via supply bases, tubular and pipework deposits, decommissioning residues
Contaminated items
Scale-bearing tubulars and equipment, filters and internals, contaminated PPE and consumables from NORM handling
